Choosing a clinic abroad: 12 questions to ask beforehand

Choosing a clinic abroad: 12 questions to ask beforehand

Anyone planning treatment abroad often starts by comparing prices. For a sound decision, however, other questions are at least as important. These twelve questions will help you compare clinics in a structured way – whichever country you choose.

Qualifications and responsibility

  1. Who will carry out the procedure – and what specialist qualifications and experience does this person have?
  2. Does the clinic hold the licence required in that country for this procedure?
  3. Who is responsible for the anaesthesia, and what emergency equipment is available?

Informed consent and decision

  1. Will there be a face-to-face informed-consent consultation, including an examination, before the procedure?
  2. In which language are the consultation and the contract conducted – and will you receive the documents in writing?
  3. Will you have enough time to think things over after the consultation?

Costs

  1. Which services are included in the price and which are not (e.g. preliminary examinations, medication, compression garments, follow-up appointments)?
  2. Who bears the costs if a revision procedure or treatment for complications becomes necessary?
  3. What additional costs may arise in Germany – for example for aftercare or in the event of subsequent illnesses (§ 52(2) SGB V, German Social Code, Book V)?

Aftercare

  1. How long should you stay on site after the procedure?
  2. Will you receive a doctor’s letter, a surgical report and, where applicable, an implant card?
  3. How can you reach the clinic after you return home, and who will look after you in Germany?
